In the middle of all the pastoral sadness in Ballykeel, news came through that our good friend Rev Noel Agnew has gone. As a family we were close to Noel. He was well known and well loved in our Church too. There are so many funny stories about Big Noel. Others who knew him longer and better than me will have rich memories.
I remember once I asked him: “Noel, what did you do in your holiday?” His answer: “I shoveled tonnes of prawn on a boat off the Isle of Man”. Not the average Presbyterian minister.
He loved Scotland and loved Ireland. He longed for revival in both lands. I’ve a picture somewhere in the house here of Noel and Dominic Smart laughing their heads off together. They’re laughing now. Psalm 20:5.
It is appropriate to remember the Rev. Noel Agnew, who passed away yesterday following a short illness.
Noel was well known amongst the fishing communities of County Down, Scotland and as can be seen from the photograph Donegal.
A gentleman. A true fishermen’s friend. His regular visits will be missed.
This evening the sad news came through about Noel Agnew, a long time friend, encourager and inspiration to many in our congregation who led worship here just last month. He will be sadly missed, yet we do not grieve as those without hope, tonight Noel is in glory. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
It is with total shock and deep sadness that we’ve just learned that our good friend Rev Noel Agnew passed away today around 5pm. I can hardly believe I’m writing this as Noel was making good progress, after some surgery to have stents fitted and was talking about getting home.
Now he is Home
‘The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.’ Job 1:21
