On-Device Neural Processing Demands Force Smartphone Memory Architecture Overhaul

 ·  1 min read

The integration of localized generative artificial intelligence models into mobile operating systems has exposed a primary bottleneck in handset hardware: memory bandwidth and capacity. Handset vendors are overhauling internal memory architectures ahead of the upcoming product refresh cycle.

Hardware Specifications
Baseline system memory across premium smartphone tiers is shifting from 8GB to 12GB and 16GB configurations. Furthermore, chipmakers are mandating high-bandwidth LPDDR5X memory interfaces to sustain the data transfer rates required by on-device neural processing units (NPUs).

Supply Chain Pressures
This architectural requirement is absorbing global mobile DRAM capacity, putting upward pressure on component bill-of-materials (BOM) costs. Analysts expect average selling prices (ASPs) for flagship mobile devices to increase by 5% to 8% to compensate for elevated memory costs.
