Paul Huntley’s numerous iconic creations included the wigs worn by Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. His artistry has left a lasting impact on Broadway and the craft of wig design.
Today we mourn the loss of Paul Huntley, Diana The Musical’s beloved wig designer. He created some of the most iconic hairstyles on Broadway and on screen. He will be missed.
The great Great Wig Master & Broadway Legend Paul Huntley & me with wonderful Designer Santo Loquasto in Paul’s & my last collaboration for “Hello Dolly!” Also pictured James Kabel, Paul’s devoted friend, & Inga Thrasher, my Wig Dresser and dear friend. I love Paul Huntley so much. I am deeply saddened by the news that he has passed away. Paul is one of my most beloveds in all the land. I don’t think I’ll know what to do without him. He has wigged me and supported me for every show I’ve done since the film “Tender Mercies”. So many beautiful wigs, so many beautiful shows. Jane Greenwood introduced us. Such a gift! He guided me and taught me what works best for me. He gave me so much love and courage and mentored my artistry. His lessons have carried me through so much. What will we do without him?
It is with a heavy heart that I mourn the loss of my darling Paul Huntley. He was my friend and mentor. In New York he gave me a home. Also here in London when Alan Higgs and I were moving house and everything ran late. He is irreplaceable. The shows he trusted me with here in London include Hairspray, The Producers, Kiss Me Kate and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Fortunately I have been able to see him in his last months here in London. Travel well my dear, you were simply the best. Your clients will welcome you with open arms…Bette Davis will be heading the queue!!
Heartbroken to hear the news of legendary Broadway wig master, Paul Huntley’s passing. I will never forget his humility, wry charm, and commitment to perfection. We shared regular wig-fitting dates during South Pacific because the “Wash-That-Man” soap was so hard on the wigs, they had to be replaced every 3 weeks! I was so spoiled working with Paul on my first 3 Broadway shows, and again on @cinderellamusical. Your brilliance will not be forgotten, @paul_huntley_wigs. #RIP
