Well damn. RIP Pinto Bennett. Or as Rob Matson reminded me this morning, “The Mayor of Miserable City”. I’ve always been on the outskirts of the Motel Cowboys world and truly amazed by the impact they still have on the scene here in Idaho. Always had me daydreaming about what it must’ve been like to see em back when. My friend Lois Fry would get a sparkle in her eye and laugh telling me about the Tarwater days. When I was out with Reckless Kelly Willy was throwing a few of Pinto’s songs in the mix each night and wasn’t until I got inside those songs, unique chord changes, witty and funny, kinda bizarre and introspective lyrics…that I finally understood what made Pinto and The Motel Cowboys so unique and special. Once ya go down the rabbit hole of his catalog it’s pretty undeniable he’s a one of a kind. Feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface and it’s just impossible for his writing not to have an impact on any songwriter. Here’s the words to my favorite Pinto tune, Best Foerever Yet: She tells me that time flies indeed, it’s here and then it’s gone
Just like her, except time ain’t needing something or someone Living for tomorrow, will tomorrow ever come? And I see she wants to borrow, some time that I was from
And now I know she’s gonna tell me That I’m her number one and I bet she’s gonna say I’m still the best forever yet Too much thinking and too much aching Has put a big strain on my pride I’m tired of drinking and I’m tired of taking her memory for a ride
I used to think that yesterday, we knew how to spend the time Then I found out it was her way, of killing hers and wasting mine And now I know that I should tell her, all that tears are gonna get her is wet But you know I can’t cause she’s the best forever yet
And now I know that she don’t miss me while she’s doing whatever she does And I know that she wouldn’t call me if she knew where I was, even if she knew where I was
And now I know that I still miss her and I’m trying real hard to forget And I wish somebody new was the best forever yet I wish somebody new was the best forever yet
Pinto Bennett passed on today and though I had did not know him well I did have an opportunity to photograph him in 2011 when he was living in a sheepherders wagon on the fringes of Hammett, Idaho, and I was working on a photo project on musicians at home. He was a gracious host. And even though he had quit drinking then, he did insist we go out and buy a six-pack to bring back to the wagon.
John Marsh and I send our deepest condolences to Pinto Bennett’s family, friends, and myriad fans today. He was a dear man whose extraordinary musical talent thrilled us and he will not be forgotten. We enjoyed our meetings and loved hearing your music.
In Hungarian, my family taught me to pray, “Isten Veled” which means “Go with G-d, G-d Go with You”. With our deep respect, sorrow, and sympathy for your loss, Kelly Curtis & John Marsh e hoʻomaha me ka maluhia – rest in peace, Pinto.
