How to Find Remote Work That Is Not a Scam

 ·  1 min read

Remote job listings attract a high proportion of fraud, because the format allows a fake employer to operate entirely at a distance. The patterns are recognisable.

The common scams

Advance payment for equipment, training or a background check. No legitimate employer asks you to pay to be employed.

Overpayment schemes, where you are sent a cheque for more than owed and asked to return the difference. The cheque bounces after you have sent real money.

Data harvesting, where the process collects identity documents and bank details for an employer that does not exist.

And the reshipping arrangement, where you receive packages and forward them – which makes you part of a fraud chain.

The signals

A hiring process with no video call. Any real employer will speak to you face to face at some point.

Communication from a generic email address rather than a company domain.

Offers made unusually quickly with minimal assessment.

Pay well above market for undemanding work.

And pressure to decide immediately.

How to verify

Find the company independently rather than through their link. Check whether the role appears on their own careers page. Look up the person interviewing you on a professional network and see whether the profile has history.

Call the company’s published number and ask whether the role exists.

Where the real listings are

Company career pages directly. Established job boards with verification. Industry-specific communities. And referrals, which remain the highest-quality route by a wide margin.
