The world has lost a truly stellar human being today. I was lucky enough to call Roxanne Conrad (@rachelcaine) a friend and collaborator. She had one of the best laughs ever – so infectious it made you wanna laugh, too. Honestly, it just seems impossible she’s gone.

I met her again when Morganville Vampires was made into a mini-series. I was so excited for her. I’m sure I was one out of thousands of fans she’s met at these events, but the brief moments with her were memorable to me. She will be missed. R.I.P Roxanne Conrad/Rachel Caine (2/2)

Have you ever been so happy and honored to meet someone that when you’re finally standing in front of them you nearly burst into tears? I have, and that was when I had the great fortune of meeting Rachel Caine/Roxanne Conrad at ECCC in 2019.
It was a moment I had waited YEARS for, and my chance had finally arrived: I was going to meet Rachel freaking Caine, one of my favorite authors ever. I waited my turn and stepped up to meet her, tears trying so hard to come pouring down. We chatted, I told her how we’d previously talked on social media, gushed about my complete and utter love for the Morganville Vampires, and got a few books signed. (I so desperately wanted to bring them all—and she’d told me before that she would sign them all—but I wasn’t torturing the bag on my back and her storytelling hands with 30+ books to sign.)
It was, hands down, one of the best moments of my life, and one I’ll treasure forever.
I could’ve stayed and talked with her for hours—and I have the inkling she would’ve happily let me—but we said our goodbyes and I continued on my way, happy as could be.
You know, Rachel Caine was a master of her craft and created a world that’s like a second home to me when I’m reading it. A top notch person, she was.
She had a line at the beginning of her Morganville books: “Welcome to Morganville. You’ll never want to leave. And even if you do…well, you can’t. Sorry about that.” I’m not sorry, because it’s 100% true: it’s been over 10 years and I still haven’t had the slightest inclination to leave Morganville and my precious Glass House gang, and I can’t say I ever will.
Thanks for creating a large part of my world, Rachel. Now go do something magical with yours.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
