The organizers of the European Games announced (Wednesday) that athletes from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the championship that is being held this summer in Poland. The International Olympic Committee has put forward a proposal to re-admit individual athletes from the two countries to international sporting events, as neutral athletes and according to strict criteria.

The European Olympic Committees announced in October that the Russians and Belarusians would not be allowed to participate in the European Championships, which are scheduled to be held from June 21 to July 2 in Krakow.

A spokesman for the organizing committee told dpa that their position "remains unchanged" following the IOC's proposal.

The European Games qualify for the Paris Olympics to be held next year in some sports.

The International Olympic Committee has not yet determined whether Russians and Belarusians will be allowed to participate in the Olympics.
