Mobile network operators (MNOs) are rapidly establishing joint ventures with low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite providers following the integration of non-terrestrial network (NTN) specifications into global 3GPP standards. The move allows unmodified commercial smartphones to connect directly to orbital nodes.
Spectrum Allocation and Infrastructure
Operators are repurposing existing mid-band spectrum to support satellite relay links, targeting coverage gaps in rural and maritime regions. Commercial rollouts will initially prioritize emergency messaging and narrow-band data, with voice and broadband services scheduled for subsequent orbital deployments.
