UPDATE: Shooting Incident in Spring Creek Neighborhood

Further investigation determined this incident stemmed from a domestic situation that occurred prior to the suspect threatening suicide. The original 911 caller reported the suspect had a gun. During the call, dispatchers heard gunshots in the background. While officers were responding, there were additional 911 calls reporting gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found two victims with gunshots wounds. Officers located the suspect nearby and determined he was still armed. The suspect then led officers on a brief foot pursuit. In order to prevent any further danger to our community or officers, one officer discharged their service weapon. The suspect was pronounced deceased. The official cause of death is pending completion of an autopsy.

Investigators have identified the subjects involved as:

Victim: Taylor Leigh Cox, 28 years of age, Carmel (deceased)

Victim: Female, 66 years of age, Carmel (transported to hospital and later released)

Suspect: Julio Cesar Virula, 26 years of age, Carmel (deceased)

Shooting Incident in Spring Creek Neighborhood

On Monday, July 27, 2020, at approximately 8:04 a.m., Carmel Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 14300 block of Riverrock Court regarding a subject threatening suicide. While officers were responding, information was provided that gunshots were fired and the person that fired the gunshots left the location. Upon arrival to the area, officers found two victims with gunshot wounds. Officers located the suspect nearby and one officer discharged their service weapon during the subsequent interaction. One victim and the suspect were pronounced deceased at the scene. The second victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Based upon the preliminary investigation, it was determined the suspect shot the two victims.

Investigators are in preliminary stages of conducting a professional and thorough investigation regarding the circumstances of this incident. Investigators are still in the process of notifying next-of-kin of the deceased and processing evidence. This is an ongoing investigation and no additional information is available to release at this time.
