I got the news last night that Tom Finn had passed away. I don’t know all the details yet, but I know he had been struggling with a few health issues as of late. Most people know Tom as the bass player for the Left Banke (‘Walk Away Renee’). He was a touring, charting rockstar by the time he was 17. But that life of Tom’s was before we met. We originally met at an audition I went on for a project he was in with Mike Brown, but they didn’t want a girl. Then again, every guy band liked staying… a guy band. Girls not allowed. I enjoyed giving Tom hell about that for the rest of his life, even tho it wasn’t him that made that decision. We met again years later when I began my journey as a DJ.
Tom is one of the reasons that I’m as great a DJ as I am today. He and Sharon Lee trained me when I started at Heartbreak, and the famed Monday Nights at Heartbreak that gave me my name was originally Tom’s night that he gave up. He put his energy into his Rockabilly Sunday night party, and I turned Mondays into a Garage rock meets soul/funk night. Sharon Lee who was head DJ at the time there, taught me how to manipulate an evening and be fearless, Tom taught me music. I knew my 60s and 70s music, but it was Tom that taught me about the deep cuts and the cool tracks that were all from before my time, mostly 50s stuff. He forced me to be more curious than I was (and I was really curious). We went record shopping together for 45s and spent a fortune every time we hung out. When we both started getting into DJ-ing private events, Tom included me in some huge gigs and we double billed together. When I say huge, I mean gigs like us double billing with Elton John. That big! I’d listen to Tom’s answering machine and there would be Oprah giving him a call about a party. Not her assistant… OPRAH! I believe Tom was the first DJ to spin at the White House for the Clintons. He got the big gigs, and he gave me quite a few big ones as well. He kept me on his website as his preferred DJ until the site came down.
Aside from our DJ lives together, I loved that he would randomly call me in the middle of the night, and come get me to drive downtown to Wo Hop, or Joe’s pizza and grab an impromptu meal. Or he’d drive me all over Brooklyn and tell me stories of who sang on what corner, and all sorts of fun trivia. We’d go to Coney Island just to get a hotdog at Nathans cause it was fun. Tom was fun.
I hadn’t talked to Tom in many years, we somehow lost touch and that breaks my heart. I wish we had talked again. My friend Mike messaged me last night and said I should talk to Tom now cause he’ll hear what I have to say. So that’s what I did last night, and I had a good cry. I’m gonna miss that guy. A lot. Rock in peace Tom Finn
RIP Tom Finn, the last surviving member of The Left Banke. Tom was one of the main songwriters in the group, and a fine singer himself, though he most often did backing vox and played bass/guitar. Here’s a track w/ him singing lead:

I’m so sorry Tom Finn, original founding member, guitarist of the Left Banke died this passed weekend in June 27, after other founding member, vocalist Steve Martin Caro also passed away earlier this year in Jan. 14, 2020, a few months before and after his other one time co-member AlanMerrill did this doomed year of 2020… This truly marks an end of an era as Finn was the last surviving member of the group’s “Walk Away Renée” lineup and tragically, NO original members are left now 💔
The Left Banke were truly one of the sound innovators that defined the “Baroque Pop” of the sixties… One of my all-time favorite bands 🎼🎻🎸🎹🥁📀💘 and now a page is turned 📖📚: RIP😢#theleftbanke #tomfinn #alanmerrill #stevemartincaro #stevemartincarorip #walkawayrenee #prettyballerina #shadowsbreakingovermyhead #baroquepop #baroquepopmusic #baroquerock
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
