We extend heartfelt condolences to family members and friends of Green and Gold Legend Tommy Joe Coffey. He played and starred as a receiver and kicker for 7 years in Edmonton and was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Wall of Honor at Commonwealth Stadium in 1988.
Coffey was named a CFL All-Star 7 times and Led the CFL in receptions 4 times and was also a 4 time CFL scoring leader as a kicker. Our association is remembered with pride.
Tommy Joe Coffey, one of the best athletes in the history of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats was diagnosed with lung cancer in June and died in St. Peter’s Hospital Tuesday night.
According to Tiger-Cat Alumni Association, there will be no local services for the legendary pass receiver and ashes will be buried at a later date in Sayre, Oklahoma, writes Steve Milton.

Tommy Joe Coffey dead at 83.
Our most sincere condolences to his family for their loss.Tommy was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977 after a stellar 14-year career in which he played for the Edmonton Eskimos (1959-60, 1962-66), Tiger-Cats (1967-1972) and Toronto Argonauts (1973).
Tommy was one of the most decorated players to ever wear a Ticats jersey and will forever be a huge part of the franchise’s great history.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cat Alumni Association is sad to announce the passing of Tommy Joe Coffey.
Tommy passed away at the age of 83 on August 25, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton. Tommy was diagnosed with lung cancer this past June.
He was born in Amarillo, TX and played college football at West Texas State and was drafted by the Baltimore Colts. Tommy decided to try the CFL and played for the Edmonton Eskimos from 1959/60, 1962-66, the Tiger-Cats from 1967-72 and Argonauts in 1973.
He was a versatile player who played primarily wide receiver as well as kicker and some defensive back.
In his fourteen-year career he caught 650 passes for a total of 10,320 yards and 63 touchdowns along with one rushing, for a total of 384 points. He added another 971 career points as a kicker.
Coffey was a member of two Grey Cup winning teams, in 1967 and 1972, both with Hamilton against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
He was a 7-time CFL All-Star and 3-time runner-up for CFL Most Outstanding Player. He is was inducted as a member of both the Edmonton Eskimo and Hamilton Tiger-Cat Wall of Honour as well as the CFL Hall of Fame in 1977.
No local service will take place. Tommy will be cremated and his ashes will be buried next to his parents in Sayre, OK at a future date.
Tommy frequently said “I’m going home” in his last few weeks which had special meaning to his family.
