I’m heartbroken to hear of the passing of Prof. Tunney Lee: Urban Studies Department Head and Prof. Emeritus at MIT, founding chair of the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s School of Architecture, and a friend. Meeting with him for dozens and dozens of hours over the past three years to talk about his life and his family life was one of the greatest gifts I’ve had.

Prof. Lee, thank you for your life, your friendship, and for the model that your life has provided to countless people, of which I am just one. You remain one of the most important people to me and so many others. Your spirit was and will remain a bright light to this world. When so much is wrong in this world and when I’ve time and time again thought that things are hopeless, I’ve thought that if this world could produce someone like you, things can’t be so bad.

Your life was an exemplary one. Everyone who knows you can attest to that. I’ll forever be grateful to be one of those people.

This photo was taken at our last interview session, back in early March, when I went up to Boston to interview you. We social distanced because I was afraid of the possibility of infecting you. We were going to get hot pot that afternoon -our first lunch outside of your office at MIT – but sadly the circumstances were such that we had to cancel that meal. Still, I’m grateful that we had those last two interview sessions that week before all hell broke loose, when Patricia Jedrey- Kelley was kind enough to let me sleep on her couch. I wish that I could talk with you today- and it saddens me deeply to think that I will no longer be able to correspond with you regularly via email.

Professor Lee, you are the best man I’ve ever met. Working with you to hear about your life was a gift. Learning about your life and your family history opened up my eyes to the resilience and strength and goodness that the best of humanity brings to our world. Like I promised you, I’m not going to stop until I publish the book about you and your family. I will try my best to live up to the monumental task of putting your life history down on paper.

Thank you for everything. For as long as I live, I’ll never forget you, sir.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
