A team from the Max Planck Institute in Cologne, Germany, examined the brain activity of a number of people to find out why it is so difficult for us to refuse to eat chocolate and chips.

The study showed that fatty foods and sweets activate the reward system in the brain, the institute announced. And the brain unconsciously learns to prefer such foods. The results were published in Cell Metabolism. "Our preference for foods high in fat and sugar could be innate, or it could develop as a result of being overweight, but we think the brain learns this preference," said lead author Sharmili Edwin Thanraja.
