Humankind has known ophthalmology since the Middle Ages, and the ophthalmologist or (al-Kahhal) was an honorary member of the medical profession under the auspices of the Abbasid state. including the manufacture of tools for visual processing; The number of specialized tools used in eye operations reached dozens, and one of those tools was (the syringe needle) invented by Ammar bin Ali al-Mawsili, and it was used as a tool to extract and suction the opaque lens (cataract) from the affected eye, and it was a common operation.
Yuhanna ibn Masawiyah worked on (the transformation of the eye) in the eighth century AD, and it is perhaps the first operation in ophthalmology and surgery. the patient, recounting the surgical procedures; Then Hunayn ibn Ishaq, who became famous in the West in the ninth century AD, for his books (The Ten Articles on the Eye), (The Wisdom of the Eye), and (Masasil fi al-Ayn). In the tenth century AD, Ali bin Isa al-Kahhal became famous, and he was one of the greatest physicians in the history of ophthalmology among the Arabs. It diagnoses the nature and nature of the disease, then mentions its symptoms, signs, descriptions, characteristics, causes of this disease, and how to treat it in a clear scientific manner.
While the ancient Egyptians diagnosed many eye diseases, and discovered many herbs that treat their diseases, and used medicines of mineral or animal origin, and they also knew some surgical methods, and the Greeks benefited from ancient Egyptian medicine with the testimony of ancient historians.
The Italian (Socrates Polara) established the first specialized ophthalmology clinic in Sicily in 1829.
Al-Bassam and Al-Hajjar, pioneers of ophthalmology in the Kingdom
Dr. Hamad Abdullah Al-Hamad Al-Bassam is the first ophthalmologist in the Kingdom, and he graduated from King Edward Medical College. Affiliated to the Indian University of Bombay, Dr. Haider Othman Al-Hajjar is the first Saudi doctor in the western region, he studied in Damascus, and completed ophthalmology at Fouad I University (Cairo University) and is considered a pioneer of ophthalmology in the Kingdom, the first director of a hospital in the capital, Riyadh, and the first general director of education Medical, according to what was mentioned in the documents of the King Abdulaziz Department.

Ibn Abbas stressed the need for periodic examination of the eye every year or two to ensure the safety of eye pressure, especially when it is proven that diabetes is present, as the retina needs periodic review, as well as with the presence of: redness, itching, secretions, pain, or strange symptoms in the eye, and wearing sunglasses when Exposure to sunlight, especially at its peak time, and not touching the eyes except after washing hands with soap and water, and beware of using expired makeup tools, or their poor types, or those offered in shops for experimentation, or those belonging to others, and not sitting for a long time in front of a computer screen or television, using appropriate lighting in the room when reading, getting a sufficient amount of sleep at night, avoiding staying up late, and maintaining eye moisture; And that is by drinking sufficient amounts of water, and using moisturizing drops (artificial tears) in case of dry eyes, after consulting a doctor, eating healthy food that contains vitamins important to the eye, placing hot water compresses on the eye useful in some cases of dryness, and applying cold water compresses On the eye is useful in some cases of eye redness, and doing eye exercises that contribute to strengthening the vision, and among these exercises: holding a pen and focusing on it, and gradually bringing it closer to the nose, then keeping it away from the eye to the maximum extent; As this exercise helps to strengthen vision.
