After more than 30 years of diplomatic relations, Azerbaijan, the country located in the Caucasus region, opened today (Wednesday) an embassy in Israel with the participation of the foreign ministers of the two countries, in a step that Israel described as "historic".

In a joint press conference with his Azeri counterpart, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen considered that the opening of the Baku embassy in Israel represents a new era in relations between the two countries.

He said: I agreed with Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to enhance our cooperation in the fields of economy, security, energy and innovation. He stated that he would soon make a political visit to Baku with a large economic delegation, which would further deepen trade relations between Israel and Azerbaijan. The two ministers discussed strengthening relations in the fields of economy, energy, education, academia, culture, sports and others.

For its part, the Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that "for the first time since the establishment of relations in 1991, Azerbaijan is opening its embassy in Israel today."

Azerbaijan did not have any official diplomatic representation in Israel, but this week, the Azerbaijani ambassador, Mukhtar Mammadov, presented his letter of credit to Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Israel was one of the first countries in the world to recognize the independence of Azerbaijan in December 1991, and opened an embassy there in 1993.

Azerbaijan has one of the largest Jewish communities in the Islamic world, with a population of about 12-18 thousand people.
