When the Mustafa Muhammad – may blessings and peace be upon him – emigrated from Mecca to Medina, he arrived in Quba on Monday (12) of the month of Rabi` al-Awwal of the first Hijri year, and he, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed in Quba (4) days, until he left for Medina on the day of Friday, corresponding to (16) of the same month, and on his way, he caught up with the Friday prayer, while he was in the valley of Ranuna Valley, so he prayed it in the place where the mosque is now being held; That is why it was called the Friday Mosque, as it is also called the Valley Mosque. Relative to the Ranuna Valley, as well as the Ataka Mosque and the Qubaib Mosque; relative to the shop in which it was built.
The Friday Mosque is located between the Quba Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, approximately at the end of the first quarter of the distance between the two mosques, for the one heading north from the Quba Mosque to the Prophet’s Mosque, 900 meters from the Quba Mosque.
The mosque witnessed many construction and restoration works. The mosque was restored and renovated during the reign of Caliph Omar bin Abdulaziz, and in the Abbasid era as well, between (155-159) AH. At the end of the ninth century, the roof of the mosque was destroyed, and Shams al-Din Qawan renewed it, and the mosque witnessed the largest expansion. It was built during the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd bin Abdulaziz, after he ordered the mosque to be rebuilt and expanded in the year 1409 AH to accommodate (650) worshipers, after its capacity did not accommodate more than (70) worshipers. Construction work continued, the expansion of the mosque, and the provision of current facilities. And it was opened in 1412 AH in its current form, with a slender minaret, and (5) domes in the middle of the mosque square, the large dome, while the four domes are distributed in the sides of the mosque.
And after the completion of the Darb al-Sunna project, the walkway that connects the Prophet’s Mosque with the Quba Mosque, the Friday Mosque became overlooking the path adjacent to it on the eastern side for those coming to it and to the Quba Mosque from the Prophet’s Mosque.
