The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture revealed that the self-sufficiency rate of the mango crop in the Kingdom has reached more than 60%, indicating that the Kingdom annually produces more than 88.6 thousand tons of mangoes, through its cultivation in a number of regions on an area estimated at more than 6880 hectares.
This comes at a time when the Ministry is working through the Sustainable Rural Development Program "REEF" to increase the productive efficiency of the mango crop, achieve food security and raise its cultivation rate according to the Ministry's strategies and plans. To achieve the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030.
In a series of its reports on seasonal crops, the ministry stated that mangoes are tropical crops with high economic returns in the Kingdom, and are grown in a number of regions, most notably the Jizan region, in the governorates of Sabya, Abu Arish, Al-Darb, Samtah, and Baysh, and the Makkah region in the provinces of Al-Qunfudhah. It is also grown in the Al-Baha region in the governorates of Al-Makhwah, Qilwa, and the coastal governorates of the Tabuk region, in addition to the regions of Asir, Najran, Medina, and the eastern region.
The ministry added that the mango production season extends from April to August, and the Kingdom produces more than twenty varieties of different mangoes during this period, including: Tommy Atkins, Kate, Kent, Alfons, Sukari, Al Zibda, Al Hindi, Al Glen, Langra, Al Jolly. , Sentation, Fajr Kland, Al-Samaka, Awais, Taimur, Naomi, Valencia, Oryx Eyes, Al-Zal, Palmer, Thai, and Brebo.
