How to Actually Find a Remote Job

 ·  1 min read

Remote roles attract enormous application volumes – frequently hundreds per listing – which makes the standard approach of applying widely almost useless.

Why mass applying fails

A listing open to anyone anywhere receives applications from everywhere. Yours is one of several hundred, filtered initially by software, reviewed for seconds if at all.

The response rate for cold applications to popular remote listings is very low, and sending more of them does not change that.

What works better

Applying within the first day or two. Many roles are filled from the earliest applications and remain posted afterwards. Setting alerts and applying immediately changes the odds substantially.

Targeting companies rather than listings. Find companies that are remote-first in your field, follow them, and apply when something opens.

Referrals, which remain the highest-conversion route by a wide margin. One person inside a company mentioning your name outperforms fifty applications.

Building that requires being visible before you need the job – contributing publicly, participating in communities, having work someone can look at.

Where the listings are

Company career pages directly. Remote-specific job boards, several of which are well curated. Industry-specific communities, where roles are frequently posted before they reach general boards.

The application itself

Address the specific role. Generic applications to remote roles are immediately identifiable and immediately discarded.

Demonstrate rather than claim. A link to something you built beats a paragraph describing your capabilities.

The timeline

Months rather than weeks, for a good role. Planning for that prevents accepting something poor out of pressure.
