The Tunisian judiciary ordered the imprisonment of the leader of the Brotherhood’s Ennahda Party, Rashid Ghannouchi, on suspicion of conspiring against internal state security, after hours of interrogation with him, according to what was announced by lawyer Monia Bouali today (Thursday).

Yesterday evening (Wednesday), the investigative judge at the Court of First Instance in Tunis interrogated the leader of the Ennahda movement and a number of his party leaders on charges of plotting against internal state security and planning an attack intended to replace the state.

The Tunisian police arrested Ghannouchi from inside his home in Tunis, in implementation of an arrest warrant issued by the Public Prosecution, after he appeared in a video clip threatening to ignite a civil war, and describing supporters of President Kais Saied as “terrorists and extremists”, during a meeting of the opposition Salvation Front. 3 of the leaders of the Ennahda movement.

In addition to Ghannouchi, the investigation includes 12 people, most of whom are leaders of the Ennahda Movement, headed by Ghannouchi’s son-in-law and former Foreign Minister Rafik Abdel Salam, on charges of committing a conspiracy to attack the internal security of the state and the assault intended to replace the state body, and to force the population to attack each other according to Chapters 68 and 72 of the magazine. penal.

According to Article 68, “the perpetrator of the conspiracy to commit an attack against the internal security of the state shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of 5 years, and two years if the conspiracy is not followed by a preparatory act to carry out the attack.”

Article 72 stipulates that the death penalty shall be imposed on the perpetrator of an assault intended to change the state’s structure or to force the population to attack each other with weapons and stir up commotion on Tunisian soil.
