AI Model Prices Have Collapsed – What That Means for Small Business

 ·  2 min read

If you priced out an AI-powered workflow a year ago and walked away because the numbers did not work, it is worth opening the calculator again. The figures have not shifted slightly. They have been cut in half and then some.

What actually happened

Through July and August 2026, the major providers dropped prices one after another. OpenAI cut the cost of its cheaper model by roughly 80 percent. Google shipped a new version of its Flash model at half the price of the previous one, three weeks after that one had been declared stable. DeepSeek came out of preview at rates below what most of the competition was charging last quarter.

This is not a promotion that ends at the close of the month. It is what happens when a market gets crowded. When eleven serious models ship inside twenty days, price becomes one of the few remaining ways to stand apart.

Why it matters if you are not a tech company

Arithmetic that failed before now works. Take any repetitive task you currently do by hand: writing product descriptions, sorting customer tickets, translation, summarising reports. Processing a thousand items used to cost more than paying someone to do it. Today the same volume usually lands in single-digit dollars.

That also changes which jobs are worth automating at all. It used to be sensible only for work you do a thousand times a day. Now it pays off for work you do fifty times a week.

Where the trap is

The first is that a lower price per token does not mean a lower bill. Models that reason for longer burn more tokens on the same task. Some newer models also use a different tokeniser that consumes noticeably more tokens for identical text, so your invoice climbs even though the headline rate fell.

The second is that introductory pricing expires. Several current promotional rates run until year end or a fixed date, after which they revert to standard tariffs. If you are building something whose economics depend on that number, read the small print.

What to do this week

Pick the one task that eats the most of your time and requires no judgement. Open an account with any provider, run a hundred items through it, and look at the bill. That single test will tell you more than a month of reading about how AI is changing business.

And set a spending cap before your first call, not after. It is the only thing standing between you and an unpleasant surprise when a loop gets stuck.
