Members of the 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Committee and military and security leaders from the east and west agreed to support securing the elections and strengthen efforts to remove mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya.
Military and security leaders from the capital, Tripoli, and others from the Libyan National Army, as well as members of the Military Committee, participated in the meeting, which concluded today (Saturday) in the eastern city of Benghazi, and was supervised by the UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili.
According to the final statement, the meeting agreed to start procedures to address the problems of the displaced, the displaced and the missing, and to ensure their safe return, in coordination between the concerned security agencies in the various regions of Libya. They also agreed on the need to exchange information regarding detainees held by both sides, and to start taking practical steps to exchange detainees as soon as possible.
For his part, the UN envoy called on the military and security leaders to work to resolve the current crisis by supporting efforts to hold elections in the country and not to let the Libyans down.
The Benghazi meeting comes within the framework of a series of consultations led by the United Nations to support the military track, starting with Tunisia and then Tripoli, to unify the military and security establishment, stop the deterioration of the security situation, and achieve consensus between the conflicting forces in preparation for holding elections before the end of this year.
The United Nations is focusing on unifying military and security action in Libya during this period to create security conditions for holding elections, and advance the stalled political process since the failure to hold elections at the end of 2021.
