What Happened To Gene Thrailkill?

Loved ones of the deceased have taken to their social media page to share their grief over the death of Gene Thrailkill.

“Gene “Coach” Thrailkill passed away overnight. He was my college band director, predecessor, and friend, He was a larger than life person and a positive difference maker for so many people, including me. I cannot believe he is gone. Thank you Karen, Chad, and Dawn for sharing your husband and father with legions of OU students from 1971-2000. Your generosity, patience, and understanding allowed him to change thousands of students’ lives for the better.

I pray that you will feel peace, comfort, and encouragement in the days to come. Thank you Coach, for pouring yourself into the lives of your students for 30 years at the University of Oklahoma and at Ohio University and Dixie High School before that.

Though you have left us, your influence, love, humor, and example will be with us forever. Thank you Coach, for being my band director and seeing more potential in me than I every saw in myself. You encouraged me and gave me opportunities that transformed the trajectory of my life. Thank you Coach for being a friend and mentor who would tell me the truth (and who would let me tell the truth too), even when we disagreed.

Thank you Coach, for everything. I’m glad you are no longer in pain, but I already miss you. I promise we will do our best to keep making you proud. We will never forget you. Rest in peace.” According to Brian Britt.

“We lost a legend last night. Coach said in this interview that it’s never too late to say thank you to someone who made a difference in your life. In the early 90s, during parents weekend at OU, my dad heard Coach call me Sunshine. My dad thought it was so sweet that he called me Sunshine for the rest of his life.

I told him that Coach calls all the girls Sunshine and all the boys Tiger. I really thought that was because he didn’t remember our names. Years later, after I graduated and moved away and he had retired, I was back in Norman shopping. From behind me I heard, “Reenie Eichler!” It was Coach, with a smile and a hug. He always knew my name. What an honor.

You see, Coach knew all of our names. Because he loved us all like we were his own children. And we loved him like he was our own father. Thank you, Coach. For everything.” said Reenie Eichler Martinez.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Authorities.
