King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has come up with a scientific research; for high-quality wastewater treatment and reuse; This is done in a highly energy efficient and sustainable way; With the study of emerging microbial pollutants, which may be present in the waste water, and the removal of these pollutants using advanced techniques, with the aim of ensuring that the water can be reused safely.

Microbiologist and Associate Professor of Science, Engineering, and Environment at KAUST, Dr. Biing Hong, explained that high-quality wastewater treatment can be suitable for a variety of uses, from domestic consumption to irrigation of crops or garden plants. Noting that seawater desalination has helped the Kingdom and other countries in the region. Suffering from water scarcity, it is necessary to achieve national water security. But the treatment of wastewater, which should not, in fact, be seen as useless water; It can also contribute to food security.

She said: There are options for treating wastewater, through which that water can be cleaned, down to a level at which it becomes more pure than even our surface or groundwater, and that techniques such as membrane separation processes in which reverse osmosis membranes are used can remove almost everything from wastewater , with the exception of water particles, after which the treated wastewater can be reused, and can even be used as potable water, in addition to that this scientific research enables the identification of microbial pollutants that may be contained in wastewater, whether bacterial or viral.
