The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the Kingdom's keenness and interest in reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis that ends all its repercussions and preserves Syria's unity, security, stability, and Arab identity, and returns it to its Arab surroundings, in a way that achieves the good of its people, according to what was reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), today. (Tuesday).
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received in Damascus (Tuesday), Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, according to what the Syrian Ministry of Information announced. Kamal held talks with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal al-Miqdad, in the first official Saudi visit to Syria since the start of the conflict 12 years ago.
The visit comes a few days after the visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Al-Miqdad, to Jeddah, and at a time when Arab countries are discussing the possibility of Damascus returning to the League of Arab States.
And Saudi Arabia hosted (Friday) a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, in addition to Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, to discuss the return of Damascus to its Arab surroundings. The final statement of the consultative meeting of the foreign ministers of the GCC countries, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq called for an Arab leadership role in resolving the Syrian crisis.
The foreign ministers stressed that the political solution is the only solution to the Syrian crisis, noting the importance of having an Arab leadership role in efforts to end the crisis, setting up the necessary mechanisms for this role, and intensifying consultations among Arab countries to ensure the success of these efforts.
