Inflammation appears in health marketing constantly, usually as something to be reduced. It is a real process and understanding it makes the claims easier to evaluate.
What it is
The immune system’s response to injury or infection. Blood vessels widen, immune cells arrive, and the affected area becomes red, warm, swollen and painful.
That response is how wounds heal and infections are cleared. Suppressing it entirely would be catastrophic.
Acute versus chronic
Acute inflammation resolves. You cut yourself, it becomes inflamed, it heals, the response ends.
Chronic inflammation is a low-level response that persists without an obvious cause. This is what health writing means when it refers to inflammation as a problem, and it is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and several other conditions.
Whether it causes those conditions or accompanies them is not fully resolved and varies by condition.
What is associated with lower chronic inflammation
Regular physical activity. Adequate sleep. Not smoking. Maintaining a healthy weight. A diet with more vegetables, fibre and unsaturated fats and less ultra-processed food.
These are the same recommendations that appear for nearly everything, which is either suspicious or informative depending on your disposition.
How to read the marketing
Anti-inflammatory as a product claim is usually unmeasured. Ask whether inflammation was measured in humans, with what marker, and whether the change corresponded to any health outcome.
Most products claiming it have not been tested that way.
The caveat
Anyone with a diagnosed inflammatory condition should be following medical advice rather than general reading.
