Washington is preparing to impose sanctions on members of both sides of the conflict in Sudan, while the European Union called for an immediate halt to the fighting.

The Wall Street Journal quoted a US State Department spokesman as saying: Washington is consulting closely with regional partners and others on the situation in Sudan, and calls on all parties to renounce violence and return to negotiations.

For its part, the European Union condemned the military operations between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

In a statement, he called on all parties to ensure the safety of civilians, humanitarian workers and staff of diplomatic missions. He urged all parties to stop the fighting immediately and without conditions, as a first step towards a lasting agreement, and to allow unimpeded humanitarian access. The statement welcomed regional and international mediation efforts as necessary to return Sudan to the path of peace and stability.

In turn, British Secretary of State for African Affairs Andrew Mitchell revealed that his country is working closely with its regional and international allies to ensure an end to the clashes.

In a statement to Al-Jazeera, he called on the warring parties to stop the fighting immediately, and said that these horrific events that take lives and cause the killing of humanitarian workers must stop now.

The German government condemned the fighting in Sudan and said it was appalled by the level of violence, especially against civilians and aid workers. It called for the parties to the conflict to commit to an immediate ceasefire and calm the situation in Sudan.
